Anish Kapoor was born in Bombay in 1954. In the 70s he moved to London, where he still lives and works today. He has had solo shows at the Kunsthalle in Basle, the Tate Gallery and Hayward Gallery in London, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the CAPC in Bordeaux, the CCBB Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and, more recently, at the Haus der Kunst in Munich and the Royal Academy of Arts in London and many more internationally acclaimed institutions. Kapoor’s works are held in many public and private collections, including the MoMA in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He received the Premio Duemila at the Venice Biennale in 1990, the Turner Prize in 1991, and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship at the London Institute in 1997. Kapoor belongs to the line of artists who pose alchemical questions, and who also precede by way of paradoxical concepts, producing works that push us beyond appearance in search of being. In so doing he makes us reflect on the latent state of the power of matter itself, of the energy contained within it, and for this reason ametaphor of the entire universe.

DANIEL BUREN 丹尼尔·布伦

After studying atthe Ecole des Métiers d’Art from 1957 to 1960, followed by a brief spell at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Daniel Buren (Boulogne-Billancourt,1938–) conducted a series of experiments at the beginning of his artistic career that lay on the boundary between painting, sculpture and cinema. Following his first pictorial works in 1960, he moved rapidly towards an economy of means which already revealed a neutralization of the illusionistic content of painting and his indifference for the narrative subject, central themes in his work as an artist. In 1965 he began touse a striped curtain material, the components of which became the basis of his artistic syntax – alternate white and coloured vertical stripes, each 8.7 cm wide. This industrially manufactured motif responded perfectly to his desirefor objectivity and enabled him to accentuate the impersonal nature of his work, even though initially it was only used as a support. To date, Daniel Buren has produced thousands of in situ installations all over the world. The majority of these are destroyed after being presented, and so do not exist outside the time and space for which they are conceived. However, there is also an important body of permanent works in the collections of leading museums around the world, and it is surprising to note how such an economy of means has generated such a richness and complexity of work.
